Which relationship has taught you the most about yourself?
The more we understand God in the Bible, the more we understand ourselves. God is high, holy, just, good, loving, and merciful. He is all powerful, all knowing, omnipresent, and self- sustaining.
The higher the view we have of God, the lower the view we have of ourselves. God is perfect. We are sinful. God is righteous. We are wicked. God is powerful. We are helpless. God is loving. We are selfish. God is self- sustaining. We are dependent upon Him.
Johnathan Edwards compared us to venomous spiders hanging on a thread over a boiling pot. The only thing sustaining us over it is the merciful hand of God. I don’t think that is right. It’s an insult to spiders everywhere. We are worse than that, and God is more merciful than that.
When I am faithless, God remains faithful. When I am weak, He is strong. God is the ultimate good. Knowing God reveals a lot about ourselves.
Bad news: we have all lied, used God’s name in vain, stolen, and looked with lust. We are lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterers at heart. We all deserve to burn in Hell for all eternity.
Good news: God is rich in mercy. He sent Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, to live a sinless life, die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rise from the dead three days later. God calls all people everywhere to repent (turn from sin) and trust in Jesus Christ to save them from sin.
God will seal His people with the Holy Spirit, who keeps His people saved, transforms them from evil to Good, and keeps them holy. God makes everything better.
