Introduction

One of the most important truths revealed in the creation account is that God has rights over His creation. Because He is the Creator, He alone defines what is good, what is evil, and what is morally right. This is not up for debate. It is not determined by culture. It is not decided by courts. It is established by the God who spoke the universe into existence.

Yet we live in a world that increasingly denies absolute right and wrong. Ironically, many who claim morality is relative still speak passionately about “rights.” But rights cannot exist without a moral authority — and Scripture teaches that authority belongs to God alone.

When Culture Redefines Good, It Collides with the Creator

In 2014, the United States Supreme Court ruled that same‑sex couples have a legal right to marry. The cultural reasoning was simple: If two people love each other, they should be allowed to marry.

But this reasoning rests on a worldview that denies absolute moral truth. It assumes that marriage is a human invention, defined by human desire, and subject to human revision.

Scripture teaches the opposite.

God defined marriage before culture existed. God defined marriage before governments existed. God defined marriage before sin existed.

Genesis 2:24 establishes the pattern:

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (ESV)

Marriage is not a human right invented by society. It is a God‑given institution created for one man and one woman. God’s rights as Creator outrank every human court, every cultural trend, and every political movement.

What Is a Right?

A right is not a feeling, a preference, or a social trend. A right is a moral claim of authority given by God.

In creation, God gave humanity specific rights:

• the right to rule over creation
• the right to reproduce
• the right to glorify God through obedience
• the right to enter into marriage as He defines it

These rights come from God’s design, not human opinion. Because God created marriage, He alone determines what marriage is.

Love Does Not Redefine Marriage

Some argue, “If two people love each other, shouldn’t they be allowed to marry?” But this question assumes that all forms of love are identical and interchangeable.

Scripture — and even human experience — shows otherwise.

A father loves his children, but he should not marry them. A brother loves his sister, but he should not marry her. Friends love one another deeply, but that does not constitute marriage.

Love exists in different forms:

• familial love
• covenantal love
• brotherly affection
• parental love
• marital love

Marriage is a covenantal union designed specifically for a man and a woman to glorify God through unity, fruitfulness, and stewardship of creation. It is not a contract, not a tax benefit, not a civil arrangement, and not a sentimental expression. It is a divine institution with divine purpose.

Christians Must Hold to God’s Definition

Because God determines what is good, Christians cannot accept definitions of marriage that contradict Scripture. This conviction has cost many believers dearly:

• bakers sued for declining to participate in ceremonies
• photographers taken to court
• employees disciplined or fired
• students ostracized
• families strained
• churches targeted

But God sees. God knows. And God rewards those who stand for His truth.

Obedience to God is never wasted.

God Determines What Is Good in Every Area of Life

Marriage is only one example. God’s authority extends to every moral issue.

Violence

God opposes violence, even when culture justifies it. Scripture teaches that violence entered the world through sin, not through God’s design.

Human Value

God determined racism as evil by creating one man and one woman from whom all humanity descends. There is one human race — one blood — created in God’s image.

Morality

God declared creation “good” because it reflected His order. Anything that contradicts His order is not good, no matter how passionately culture defends it.

Christians cannot promote what God calls evil. Christians cannot redefine what God has defined. Christians cannot surrender truth to cultural pressure.

We must stand with the Creator.

Conclusion: God’s Rights Over Creation Are Non‑Negotiable

Because God created the world, He owns it. Because God owns it, He defines it. Because God defines it, He determines what is good.

Culture may shift. Courts may rule. Opinions may change. But God’s Word stands firm.

Christians must listen to God over every competing voice — not only in the marriage debate, but in every area of life. The world does not determine goodness. God does. And His definition is the only one that leads to life, joy, and truth.
