Introduction

One of the most important truths revealed in the creation account is that God is eternal and God is holy. Before anything existed — before matter, energy, space, or time — God was. And because He is holy, He is utterly distinct from His creation, pure in His nature, and perfect in His character.

This is not a side doctrine. It is foundational. If God is not eternal, He is not God. If God is not holy, He is not worthy of worship. And if God is not distinct from creation, then Christianity collapses into the same confusion that marks the world’s religions.

Genesis 1 does more than tell us how the world began. It tells us who God is — and that truth has massive implications for how Christians respond to competing worldviews.

The Eternal God vs. Naturalism

Naturalism claims the universe is eternal or self‑existing. Some versions argue that all matter and energy were once condensed into “nothing,” which then exploded into everything. Others claim an infinite cycle of Big Bangs.

But this worldview collapses under its own weight. If the universe is eternal, then:

• matter is eternal
• energy is eternal
• time is eternal
• space is eternal

And if these things are eternal, then God is not.

Naturalism directly contradicts Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created…” Creation has a beginning. God does not.

A Christian cannot accept a worldview that dethrones the Creator and enthrones the creation. If God is eternal, naturalism is false — and Christians must reject it without hesitation.

The Eternal God vs. Mormonism

Mormonism teaches that God was once a man on another planet who became a god by obedience to his god. It teaches that God has spirit wives, produces spirit children, and is part of an eternal chain of gods.

This worldview destroys the holiness of God.

If God was once a man, He is not eternal. If God came from creation, He is not holy. If God is one of many gods, He is not unique.

Genesis 1 reveals a God who exists before creation, outside creation, and independent of creation. He does not emerge from the universe — He speaks the universe into existence.

A Christian cannot accept Mormonism as biblical or as another form of Christianity. Its god is not the God of Scripture.

The Holy God vs. Pantheism

Hinduism and other Eastern religions teach that “God is everything and everything is God.” This is pantheism. It erases the distinction between Creator and creation.

But Scripture teaches the opposite:

• God is holy — set apart
• God is distinct — not part of creation
• God is personal — not an impersonal force

Pantheism dissolves God into the universe. Genesis reveals a God who commands the universe.

The Invisible God vs. Naturalistic Skepticism

Naturalists often argue that God cannot exist because He cannot be seen. But this objection misunderstands the nature of God.

If God created matter, He is not made of matter. If God created time, He is not bound by time. If God created space, He is not contained by space. If God created energy, He is not composed of energy.

The only things humans can observe are matter, energy, space, and time. God is none of these. Therefore, He cannot be observed by natural means.

Creation points to God (Psalm 19:1), but creation is not God. God must reveal Himself through His Word — and He has done so through the prophets and apostles.

The Eternal God Is Unstoppable

Because God is eternal, holy, and unaffected by time, nothing surprises Him. Nothing thwarts Him. Nothing limits Him.

• No disaster
• No government
• No ideology
• No false religion
• No cultural movement

God is not threatened by human rebellion. Psalm 2 paints the picture clearly:

“He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.” (Psalm 2:4, ESV)

The nations rage, but God reigns.

This truth comforts believers. The world may shake, but God does not. The culture may rebel, but God does not retreat. The plans of men may fail, but God’s decrees stand forever.

The Eternal God Refutes Postmodernism

Postmodernism claims all beliefs are true, all perspectives are valid, and truth is whatever one wants it to be.

But if God is eternal and holy, then:

• He cannot be everything and nothing at the same time
• He cannot exist and not exist simultaneously
• He cannot be a created being and the Creator
• He cannot be defined by human opinion

Truth is not fluid. Truth is not subjective. Truth is not determined by culture.

Truth is determined by God.

Therefore, Christians must believe what Scripture says about God over every competing worldview — naturalism, Mormonism, pantheism, postmodernism, or any other ideology that contradicts the eternal, holy God revealed in Genesis.

Conclusion: Stand Firm on the God of Genesis

Genesis 1 does more than describe creation. It reveals the character of the Creator:

• Eternal
• Holy
• Distinct
• Sovereign
• Unchanging
• Unstoppable

If Christians lose this doctrine, they lose the foundation of their faith. But if Christians hold fast to the God of Genesis, they stand on unshakable ground.

God is eternal. God is holy. God is Creator. God is Lord.

And no worldview can overthrow Him.
