Introduction
One of the most important questions in religious discussions is whether a faith’s sacred text is consistent with reality. If a book claims to come from God and to be free from error, then historical accuracy becomes an important test of that claim.
The Qur’an presents itself as a revelation from God and challenges readers to find discrepancies within it. Because of that challenge, some Christian apologists argue that Islam should be evaluated according to its own standard. They contend that several statements in the Qur’an about Christianity and biblical history do not align with historical evidence. If those criticisms are correct, they argue, Islam would fail the very test the Qur’an sets for itself.
The Qur’an’s Claim of Consistency
The Qur’an describes itself as free from error and inconsistency. If genuine historical mistakes can be demonstrated, then the Qur’an’s claim to divine perfection would be undermined.
For that reason, the discussion focuses on the Qur’an’s historical-theological claims.
Did Christians Ever Believe Mary Was Part of the Trinity?
The Quran presents Mary as a member of the Trinity. According to historic Christian doctrine, the Trinity consists of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
No Christian creed has ever identified Mary as the third member of the Trinity. Because of this, the Qur’an misunderstands a central Christian belief and therefore makes an inaccurate historical claim about Christianity.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
A second issue concerns Jesus’ death.
The Qur’an teaches that Jesus was not crucified, whereas the New Testament repeatedly states that he was. The crucifixion is one of the most firmly established events in ancient history. The New Testament, references found in Josephus, and the Talmud mention Jesus’ execution.
If the crucifixion is historically secure, then the Qur’an’s denial of it creates a serious problem for Islam’s claim of inerrancy.
Was the Bible Corrupted?
Islam traditionally teaches that God revealed earlier scriptures but that portions of those scriptures were later altered or obscured. However, the field of textual criticism upholds the resilience of Scripture. Even Islam teaches that God’s Word cannot be corrupted.
The large number of surviving biblical manuscripts provides strong evidence that the text of the New Testament has been preserved with a high degree of accuracy. There are over 6,000 carefully preserved New Testament manuscripts. There is no manuscript evidence showing that references to Muhammad once existed in the New Testament and were later removed.
Because of this, the explanation of corruption lacks historical support.
Mary and the Sister of Aaron
Another point of inconsistency is the Qur’anic references to Mary as the “sister of Aaron.”
These passages identify Jesus’ mother with the family of Moses and Aaron; since Aaron lived many centuries before Mary, this is a historical mistake that would be incompatible with divine revelation.
Why the Resurrection Matters
Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead.
Christianity rests upon eyewitness testimony given by people who claimed to have seen the risen Christ. The New Testament documents were written close enough to the events to preserve reliable testimony, and this evidence outweighs later claims that deny the crucifixion.
The historical evidence for the death and resurrection of Jesus is the decisive factor separating Christianity from Islam.
Conclusion
The central thesis of the article is that Islam should be judged by its own standard of consistency. The Qur’an contains historical inaccuracies regarding Christian beliefs, the crucifixion of Jesus, the preservation of Scripture, and the identity of Mary. Based on those criticisms, Islam fails its own test of inerrancy, while Christianity’s historical claims, particularly concerning Jesus’ death and resurrection, remain credible.
