As a Bible-believing Christian and a person with high-functioning autism, I have found that the Bible teaches practical truths that help us thrive in everyday life.
- God is Sovereign. God is in complete control over the universe. He is in control of how you are made, what you are born with, and all circumstances in your life. Yes, God created you uniquely with your autism in mind.
- God is good. Whatever your autism does regarding not being able to understand or relate to other people, God designed that for your good. God is good. He wasn’t unjust in giving you autism. He did that for your good and His glory.
- Everyone is broken in some way or another. Everyone has been broken by sin, lust, physical, psychological, and spiritual diseases. You’re not the only one who is broken. Thankfully, God is using your brokenness to make you whole in Christ. There are no categories of normal people and people with autism.
- Understanding most things as black and white protects you from making horrible, sinful decisions. You just need to let your moral compass be mastered by the Bible. Eventually, it will help you understand the nuances of moral complexity as you understand the Scriptures better.
- Scripture understanding makes you whole. The more you understand the Scriptures, the more you will understand yourself and other people. It’s the secret to understanding the social cues in society. It keeps you from being paranoid because you know people are sinful in nature and God is supremely good. Read the Bible every day and ask God to help you understand it. God will answer that prayer.
Bad news: we have all lied, used God’s name in vain, stolen, and looked with lust. We are lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterers at heart. We all deserve to burn in Hell for all eternity.
Good news: God is rich in mercy. He sent Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, to live a sinless life, die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rise from the dead three days later. God calls all people everywhere to repent (turn from sin) and trust in Jesus Christ to save them from sin.
God will seal His people with the Holy Spirit, who keeps His people saved, transforms them from evil to Good, and keeps them holy. God makes everything better.
