Have you ever regretted reading a book — which one and why?
I don’t typically read books I don’t like. I’m not a fan of mystery, thriller, or horror. So I have never regretted reading a book. Each experience has helped me learn more about the human condition.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t read books I agree with. I read the Quran twice. I read it for an apologetics paper that I turned into a blog. Muhammad said that if you find any discrepancy in his book, it is not from Allah. I found five historical discrepancies that contradict historic Christian doctrine. You can find that paper here. Do I regret reading the Quran? No, I found it strengthened my faith that the Bible is God’s Word.
I’ve read the Inheritance Cycle several times. However, I was disappointed in the last book Inheritance. At the end of the book, Eragon becomes agnostic. That was a huge disappointment. Should I have seen it coming? Yes, there were plenty of set ups for that. Do I regret reading it? No. It’s still an enjoyable story even though I don’t agree with the author’s point of view.
Read to understand. If you want to understand people, read their books. Keep the Bible as your guide and judge all other books with that. However, read other books to understand people.
