Introduction
One of the most important truths revealed in Genesis is that God is God — and humans are not. Humanity is created in God’s image, but humanity is not divine. We reflect God, but we do not become God. We bear His likeness, but we do not share His nature.
This truth cuts directly against one of the oldest temptations in human history: the desire to rise above our created limits and elevate ourselves to the level of God. From Eden to Babel to modern technological dreams, mankind has repeatedly attempted to transcend the boundaries God has set.
But Scripture is clear: humans cannot surpass what God created them to be.
Humanity Is Not Evolving Into Something Greater
Because of the Fall, humanity is not climbing upward — morally, spiritually, or physically. We are not becoming gods. We are not evolving into superior beings. We are not transcending our nature.
If anything, Scripture teaches the opposite:
- sin corrupts
- death reigns
- rebellion increases
- pride blinds
- humanity declines
Yet mankind continues trying to elevate itself against God, spiraling downward while imagining it is climbing upward.
Transhumanism: The Latest Attempt to Replace God
One of the newest expressions of this ancient rebellion is transhumanism — the belief that humans can improve themselves beyond their natural limits through technology, artificial intelligence, genetic manipulation, and machinery.
Mike Riddle summarizes the movement well:
Transhumanists believe that by augmenting our intelligence with A.I., we can create a future in which we can solve our problems… Ultimately, the goal of transhumanism is to live longer, do away with death, enhance human capabilities, and become our own gods.
This is not a scientific project. It is a theological one. It is humanity’s attempt to rewrite creation, redefine human nature, and escape the consequences of sin.
But Scripture teaches that no technology can solve humanity’s greatest problems:
- sin
- death
- judgment
Machines cannot save us. Artificial intelligence cannot redeem us. Gene therapy cannot resurrect us.
Only God can.
Only One Man Has Ever Been God
Humanity cannot become divine. There has only ever been one man who was fully God and fully man — Jesus Christ.
He alone:
- lived a sinless life
- conquered death
- paid the penalty for sin
- rose from the grave
- offers eternal life
Christ makes sinners into children of God — but He does not make humans into gods. Any attempt to usurp God’s authority is rebellion, not progress.
Transhumanism Repeats the Old Rebellions
Transhumanism is not new. It is simply the latest version of the same rebellion humanity has attempted since the beginning.
Eden: The First Attempt
Adam and Eve sought to “be like God” by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3). The result was sin, death, and separation from God.
Babel: The Second Attempt
Humanity united to build a tower “with its top in the heavens” (Genesis 11), attempting to defy God’s command to fill the earth. God scattered them and confused their languages.
Every attempt to overthrow God’s design ends in disaster. Transhumanism will be no different. It promises salvation through technology, but it delivers confusion, pride, and rebellion.
Christians must trust God — not machines — to solve humanity’s deepest problems.
Humans Are Image Bearers, Not Gods
Because humans are created in God’s image, we possess immense value. We are not disposable. We are not replaceable. We are not mere biological machines. But we are also not divine.
Being made in God’s image means:
- humans have dignity
- humans have worth
- humans have moral responsibility
- humans have limits
- humans must worship God, not themselves
We are created to serve God, not to replace Him.
Conclusion: Humanity Must Bow, Not Rise Up
The doctrine of creation teaches us that:
- God is God
- humans are His image bearers
- humans cannot transcend their nature
- humans cannot escape sin and death through technology
- humans must submit to God’s authority
Every attempt to become gods — whether through ancient rebellion or modern technology — leads to ruin. But every act of submission to God leads to life, joy, and purpose.
Humanity’s hope is not in machines, medicine, or artificial intelligence. Humanity’s hope is in Christ.
He is God. We are not. And that truth is our greatest comfort.
