In my previous post, I said that I do not focus on self-care. I let God take care of me. That statement may sound strange in a culture that constantly tells us to look inward for strength, peace, and fulfillment. Yet Scripture repeatedly points us away from ourselves and toward God. The question is this: what does it actually look like to let God take care of you?
Many people think trusting God means doing nothing. They imagine that faith is passively waiting for God to fix every problem while we sit on the sidelines. But that is not the biblical picture.
God takes care of His people through the means He has ordained.
When I am anxious, God cares for me as I cast my cares upon Him in prayer. When I am spiritually weak, God strengthens me through His Word. When I am struggling with sin, He provides accountability and encouragement through the church. When I gather with God’s people to worship, He reminds me of His promises and directs my eyes back to Christ.
None of these things are merely religious routines. They are the channels through which God’s grace flows into our lives.
The world says, “Look within yourself.”
God says, “Look to Me.”
The world says, “Trust your heart.”
God says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
The world says, “Put yourself first.”
Jesus says, “Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”
This is why soul-care is so important. A person can have a perfect diet, exercise regularly, sleep eight hours every night, and still have a starving soul. Physical health is valuable, but spiritual health is eternal.
God never promised that His people would be free from difficulties. Christians still experience sickness, grief, disappointment, and hardship. However, God has promised to be with His people through every trial. He comforts us, strengthens us, and teaches us to depend upon Him rather than ourselves.
The greatest example of God’s care is found in the gospel itself.
Before we ever sought Him, God sought us. Before we could rescue ourselves, Christ died for sinners. Before we could make ourselves righteous, Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live. God’s care for His people is not merely about helping us through a hard day. It is about saving us from sin and reconciling us to Himself.
That is real care.
If you are exhausted from trying to carry life on your own shoulders, stop looking to yourself as the solution. Look to Christ. Open His Word. Pray. Gather with His people. Trust His promises.
You do not have to be your own savior.
God takes care of His people far better than they could ever take care of themselves.
Bad news: we have all lied, used God’s name in vain, stolen, and looked with lust. We are lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterers at heart. We all deserve to burn in Hell for all eternity.
Good news: God is rich in mercy. He sent Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, to live a sinless life, die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rise from the dead three days later. God calls all people everywhere to repent (turn from sin) and trust in Jesus Christ to save them from sin.
God will seal His people with the Holy Spirit, who keeps His people saved, transforms them from evil to Good, and keeps them holy. God makes everything better.
