” And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” John 3:19-21, ESV
Just did a Facebook ad campaign for my first book When My Ox Gores My Neighbor: Using Hermeneutics to Travel From Mt. Sinai to Mt. Zion. It went out to over 2,000 people. Some people liked it but others did not. One man said that the only good thing a Bible is good for is a doorstop or toilet paper. Why did he say that? Obviously he was under conviction of his sin that he loved so much.
The above passage gives Jesus’ answer as to why people don’t believe in Him. When Jesus came into the world he divinely revealed the truth. People don’t like the truth that God is good and we are not. The reason is because they are evil and love their sin. They don’t want the truth of God’s wrath toward their sin raining on their parade. So they don’t come to the truth. But those who accept the truth of God is good and we are not, come to God humbly for forgiveness of sin through faith and trust in Jesus Christ.
John 3:19-21 needs to be kept in context with John 3:14-18.
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”
People who say that the only good thing a Bible is good for is a doorstop or toilet paper, are showing their hatred for God and their love for sin. These people need the gospel, prayer, and love. Because, if they don’t repent they will be languishing in Hell for their sin that they hold so dear by the God they hold in contempt.
